Dallas Business Journal – Published September 16, 2005

Over the past 25 years, Dallas-based Aloe Vera of America has quietly grown into the world’s largest producer of nutritional drinks, cosmetics and other products using extract from the aloe plant as a key ingredient.

After cramming equipment and products into every nook and cranny of its 163,000-square-foot headquarters and plant on Dilworth Road in East Dallas, the company has bought a 230,000-square-foot industrial facility about three miles away and will begin work next month on a 40,000-square-foot, $5 million manufacturing addition.

About 150 employees will make the move to the new plant in the first quarter of 2006.

One of the largest exporters in Dallas, AVOA has just one customer: Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Forever Living Products. Both companies are owned by billionaire Rex Maughan, a Forbes 400 member who also owns Southfork Ranch. A multilevel marketing company — think Mary Kay or Avon — Forever Living Products has 7.5 million distributors in 105 countries around the globe, from Angola to Vietnam. It raked in more than $2 billion in sales last year.
