Founded by the inspirational Mary Kay Ash in 1963,

and with approximately $2.6 Billion in revenues (2008), Mary Kay Inc, is the 4th largest Direct Selling company with a multilevel marketing (MLM) compensation plan in the world.

Mary Kay® products are sold in more than 35 markets worldwide, and the Company’s global independent sales force exceeds 2 million. Yet, it remains today what Mary Kay Ash first envisioned – a company with a heart. Find out how Mary Kay continues to make life more beautiful for women around the world.

Is Mary Kay an MLM or multilevel marketing company?

Interestingly, many Mary Kay consultants argue that the company is not an MLM or mulitlevel marketing company. The Direct Selling Association, of which Mary Kay is a member, defines MLM as follows:

Multilevel marketing, which is commonly referred to as MLM, is a type of compensation plan found in direct selling. A direct selling company that offers a multilevel compensation plan pays its representatives based on the individual’s product sales as well as that of their “downline,” which refers to a group of people that consultants bring into a company to generate sales, their recruits, and so on.

I have been a Mary Kay Sales Director for a year and a consultant for four. I make good money, and because I followed the companies training on the correct way to run a business and manage my money, I make good money and I actually have no debt in my business. I paid off my initial loan for inventory within six months and I am now teaching the consultants in my unit to do the same. If you follow the company training and put the time into it, it is very profitable. If you buy inventory and then quit because it was hard or because you weren’t willing to invest the time into it, then yes you will be disappointed and end up in debt.

In para (2) above, it states that the Company’s global (35 markets) independent sales force exceeds two million. If you want to break this number down by country, try a web search.

Most of those people just bought one batch of inventory that they couldn’t sell. Almost no-one makes a living out of Mary Kay. Even those who claim to be succeeding are mostly barely scrapping by while getting deeper and deeper into debt buying inventory to make their targets. The company depends on a constant supply of new recruits. It is their purchases that make up most of its sales.
